I Wrote This: “How Learning To Cross-Country Ski With My Partner Brought Us Closer Together” – Well + Good
January 30, 2023:
“Cross-country skiing was new and different to me, but learning to do it with my partner has been an unexpected joy. And that’s a sentence I’d never thought I’d write.” – Me.
Yayyy!!! I got another byline writing an easy, breezy, beautiful story of “How Learning To Cross-Country Ski With My Partner Brought Us Closer Together” for Well + Good. Published just in time for Valentine’s Day, I am proud to have written this personal essay.
Okay, I had too much fun writing this article, incorporating as many cheesy romance lines and fun phrases as I could because I wanted the story to reflect my joyous attitude toward learning to cross-country ski. And, of course, my partner is always right there with me, making me laugh the entire time. See if you can catch my Flight of the Conchords reference in the text. If you’d like to explore the places where I’ve tried Nordic skiing, see these blog posts:

I Wrote This: “Where To Stay, Eat, and Play in Quebec for the Fall Trip of a Lifetime” – Matador Network
November 17, 2023:
Published author alert!! Yep, that’s right, I wrote an article for Matador Network called “Where To Stay, Eat, and Play in Quebec for the Fall Trip of a Lifetime” about my outdoorsy autumn trip to Québec, Canada.
In the article, I share almost my exact itinerary for visiting the French-speaking city and surrounding area, for which the province was named. During the trip, I experienced three different regions: Côte-Nord, Charlevoix, and Québec City, with activities from whale watching in the St. Lawrence River (wild, I know) to a Via Ferrata and two national park visits. Plus, I share all of the restaurants that I ate at – one had a 7-course menu with wine pairing, and another had a 5-course menu with the chefs making the meal in the middle of the restaurant. I rolled around in the fall colors, saw whales, learned about the First People, ate far too much, and collapsed in a comfy bed each night. Québec ended up being the fall destination of my dreams.
Whether you’re planing a trip or not, check out MY article “Where To Stay, Eat, and Play in Quebec for the Fall Trip of a Lifetime” on Matador Network. (EEEEEE, so proud!)

July 8, 2022:
It’s absolutely no surprise that I loved the rafting trip that I did through the Grand Canyon in 2021, so I am stoked that Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner added this trip to her list of the Best Solo Outdoors Trips to Take This Summer.
Especially at the south rim, the average experience of the Grand Canyon is hot, crowded, and pricey. However, a multi-day rafting trip at the very bottom of the canyon is an entirely different experience. You get to move through layer after layer of rock while peacefully sleeping out under the stars and learning about the history and geology of the incredible canyon. Then each day, you meet wild rapids and have the opportunity to hike into remote slot canyons. In the article, I mention that I would recommend the trip to nearly anyone, and it’s perfect for solo travelers!

I Wrote This: Historic Lodges of the Wild and Scenic Rogue River, ROW Adventures
Summer, 2022:
While I was on the Rogue River multi-day rafting trip, the lodges I stayed at stood out as particularly special. Deep in the wilderness, these lodges run off-grid while providing a comfortable bed and warm shower each night. Not only did they make the rafting trip feel like a luxury vacation (instead of roughing it outdoors), but they each also have a fascinating legacy that weaves into the history of the Rogue River. I was fascinated by the historic lodges and proposed doing a deep dive into them for ROW Adventures, where I spoke to each of the owners to confirm details and information to ensure an informational article about the living history on the Rogue. Check it out!
In addition to the article about the historic lodges of the Rogue River, I also have a few first-person blog posts about the trip to help you get prepared for a multi-day rafting trip:

October 3, 2023:
“The global baggage mishandling rate jumped from 4.35 bags per 1,000 passengers in 2021 to 7.6 in 2022, a nearly 75 percent increase.” — Gina Rich confirms our suspicions that more luggage has been delivered late, damaged, lost, or stolen in recent years. That should scare you right into going for carry-on only!! In her article, “How To Travel With a Carry-On Only,” she gives tangible and practical tips for traveling with a carry-on only, and I was quoted!
My tips are scattered throughout the article but are mainly about deciding when or when not to do carry-on, thinking about size and weight, using mini dropper bottles for your serums, and a multi-purpose wash for your clothes. And I love/use many other tips in the article, including some I’ve never thought of before! If you’re constantly overpacking or want a stress-free packing experience, head to my Stop Overpacking blog post for the exact system I use to pack.
The other experts cover additional tips, so be sure to check them all out in the article. It’s called “How To Travel With a Carry-On Only and Keep Your Belongings From Taking a Trip to the Island of Lost Luggage” by Gina Rich on Well + Good.

“And while it might be tempting to bank on the lucky girl syndrome to miraculously drop the perfect spring break plans into your lap, you’re going to need to do some work here, bestie.” — Siobahn Robinson is speaking my language in her article “5 Hacks for Planning The Ultimate Road Trip, According to Travel Experts“on Her Campus, and she added a few different quotes from yours truly!
My tips are all about choosing accommodations ahead of time, bringing plenty of snacks, switching drivers, and entertainment along the way. Can you tell that comfort is a priority when I plan and take road trips?! But seriously, each of these things will make the trip that much better because it’s easy to forget that the bulk of your road trip will be on the road. Might as well make the road part fun and comfy too.
The other experts cover additional tips, so be sure to check out all the hacks in the article. It’s called “5 Hacks for Planning The Ultimate Road Trip, According to Travel Experts” by Siobhan Robinson on Her Campus.

When I submitted my camping mistake, I had no idea it would end up in such a thorough set of reminders to do before heading out for a camping adventure! Felicia Chan put together a series of mistakes (honestly just good lessons) in her article, “13 Beginner Mistakes to Never, Ever Make Camping” for Wide Open Spaces.
My camping mistake is included under number 7, which is about checking the weather. The funny thing is that I DID check the weather, but I didn’t have the right gear to keep me warm during winter in Joshua Tree National Park. Boy, did I learn my lesson!! You can find out how I solved that problem in my Sleeping Pad Review for Therm-a-rest, and now I sleep like a rock. It’s an excellent reminder to pair checking the weather with a better understanding of your gear.
This is a seriously good list of camping reminders for beginners, intermediates, and even pro campers to review. Check out all the mistakes in “13 Beginner Mistakes to Never, Ever Make Camping” by Felicia Chen on Wide Open Spaces.

August 29, 2022:
I converted from Teva to Chacos!! I know, shocking. But this summer, I’ve fallen in love and had to contribute my insights to Hannah Singleton’s article “The 10 Best Hiking Sandals, According to Outdoor Experts” on SELF.
If you peruse my website, you’ll see I’ve been wearing basic Tevas for five years – ones I purchased for a trip to Costa Rica. However, in 2022, I accidentally bought the wrong size Chaco from an online thrift store. While the wrong size, it was the first time I really handled and tried on a Chaco. I discovered the straps are connected and adjusted INSIDE the shoe’s sole. Mindblowing. And they were comfortable even in the wrong size!!! So I immediately purchased the Chaco Z Cloud in blue directly from the website (*in the correct size) and have been wearing them all summer.
Hannah included a quote where I’ve worn the sandals (on a multi-day rafting trip on the Rogue River!) and also breaks down what to look for when shopping for hiking sandals. Check out the detailed info and other sandals recommended in the SELF article, “The 10 Best Hiking Sandals, According to Outdoor Experts.”

Travel light while still having all the essentials — Erica Lamberg packs in the tips in her article “Use These Tips to Pack Your Carry-on Like a Pro” on the AAA Travel Blog, and she added a quote from yours truly!
My tip is about packing SPECIFICALLY for the trip you’re going on. Sounds logical, right? It is!! But it’s also super easy to get caught up by adding all kinds of just-in-case clothes to your suitcase, which will weigh you down. While I definitely want you to be prepared for your trip, also remember that it’s okay to be slightly uncomfortable for one day. And if you need help thinking through what you want to pack, consider reading through my “Stop Overpacking!” blog post and use the free worksheet I’ve created.

Quoted in “The 10 Best U.S. Campgrounds That Need to Be on Your Bucket List” – Best Life Online
August 14, 2022:
Looking for a scenic campground?? Look no further than this Best Life Online article that lists the 10 Best Campgrounds in the U.S. because my suggestion made the list. While I’ve been to plenty of beautiful campgrounds, the one that was just a pure pleasure was the North Campground in Bryce Canyon National Park. I loved this campground for its cooler weather in the height of summer (thanks to the higher elevation), quiet surroundings (campsites were not overly close to each other), showers at the camp store, and access to the canyon. It was only a few minutes to talk to the edge of the canyon and marvel at the hoodoos. With quick access, we walked from our campsite to the main trails in this blog post — how lovely is it not to have to re-park the car? Anywho, I have great memories of this campground and hope you’ll get to visit it someday.

Quoted in “10 TIPS FOR CAMPING WITH FRIENDS” – KOA Blog
July 20, 2022:
Why yes, I do have a ton of tips for camping with friends!! That’s exactly who I camp and backpack with, so I was happy to provide quotes to Katie Jackson’s article for the KOA Blog Called, “10Tips for Camping with Friends.”
I have to say, Katie did an amazing job with this article!! Many of the things suggested are exactly what I do or believe is a good idea to do when camping with someone for the first time. My quote/tip is right at the top and is focused on making sure you choose the right kind of camping trip for the friend(s) you’re going with. You don’t want to force your chill friend to backpack 20 miles in the backcountry OR make your friend who cannot sit still just “relax” at a lake for many days. Instead, build a trip that everyone is equally excited about and comfortable doing.
Check out all of the tips in Katie’s article “10 Tips for Camping with Friends” on the KOA Blog.

July 30, 2022:
Another celebration of outdoor parks, this time Best Life Online rounded up the most underrated National Parks! It was fun to think about the National Parks that are often overlooked, but then I remembered there was one just offshore from where I live: Channel Islands National Park! And I’m super glad that Rebecca Strong included it and my quotes about the park as number 8 in her round-up of the most underrated parks. Even though it’s nearby, you must take a boat to get there, adding a layer of logistics. However, the extra work is worthwhile because the boat ride is half the fun! You might see dolphins, whales, and sea lions before you even reach land. Then, there are different environments to discover on each island! Read Rebecca’s article for my high-level thoughts on the Islands, or check out my detailed write-ups of two of the islands:

Shoutout SoCal Interview
March 15, 2022:
Imagine my surprise when Shoutout SoCal reached out about an interview back in February. Me?? You want to interview little ole me?? Well, sure!
The interview is a little more on me and less on travel, which was fun. I spoke about how I honestly don’t know when or if I should ever give up on Moderately Adventurous, an overview of Moderately Adventurous, and recommendations for visiting Santa Barbara!
It is somewhat wild to see myself featured on someone else’s website, but I am also proud of my story and the photos. Check it out at this link on Shoutout Socal!
Podcast Guest – While She’s Away

It’s one thing to go on a trip and have a fabulous time, and it’s another thing entirely to write about travel, which is what I’m genuinely passionate about. I don’t typically share the sausage-making behind the Moderately Adventurous travel blog, but it’s such a big part of my life. I am so happy to have a conversation with Dianni Hall on the While She’s Away podcast, where we share the behind-the-scenes of writing a travel blog or having a travel podcast. If you’ve ever considered starting a travel-related creative endeavor, you’ll want to listen to this episode because we cover:
- A little bit about how Moderately Adventurous came to be.
- How we each decided on our specific medium (audio, video, or writing) and why it’s so important to choose your core platform carefully.
- Realizing that no one is watching at the beginning is a great place to start.
- How doing a creative endeavor means learning how to market yourself.

Quoted in “8 State Parks That Are Even Better Than National Parks, Experts Say” – Best Life Online
July 14, 2022:
Oooh, this Best Life Online article is fun as it celebrates the often-overlooked State Parks. Abby Reinhard compiles a list of 8 incredible state parks that rival national parks, and I am stoked to report that Silver Falls State Park made it on the list!
As you can read in my blog post about Silver Falls, I was completely enamored with the State Park. Not only does it feature a trail to 10 different waterfalls, but you can also walk behind 4 of them!! The experience of walking behind the waterfall was misty, loud, and absolutely mesmerizing! I loved it. To top it off, the park is incredibly well-run with an adorable nature store and snack shop. I highly recommend visiting if you’re ever in the area.

February 14, 2022:
A Valentine’s Day surprise for me and my romantic partner!! I’m excited to be quoted in this article for TripSavvy because you can apply all of the tips to anyone you travel with – best friends, family, etc.
My tip is for active travelers! If your travel partner loves to do a particular physical activity that you’re not interested in doing, I recommend doing a different physical activity at the same time! For example, go for a hike while your travel partner goes for a bike ride… which is precisely when I did the Pololu Valley Hike on the Big Island of Hawaii. By doing physical activities simultaneously, you can stay on the same page regarding energy and hunger!
The other experts cover additional tips, so be sure to check it out if you’re planning some individual time on an upcoming trip. It’s called “How to Prioritize Individual Activities on a Couple’s Trip, According to Experts” by Rosie Bell on TripSavvy.
Quoted in “7 Sneaky Things to Check for in Every Airbnb Listing” – Apartment Therapy
January 12, 2022:
Okay, I am stoked to be quoted in this article for Apartment Therapy because it includes SO MANY good tips on what to look for in an Airbnb Listing. My quotes are sprinkled throughout and focus on the Wifi and kitchen since I often cook at Airbnbs.
And my quote about the coffee maker is honest – when I went to Norway, the first Airbnb didn’t have a way to make coffee!!! What! We went to the grocery store to figure out a coffee solution and only found instant coffee – *shocked emoji*. Our other Airbnb’s had coffee and coffee makers, so this was an anomaly. BUT we saw a bus driver make herself a cup of instant coffee while exploring. Again, I was shocked by how common it was to have instant coffee. In the US, you can pretty much guarantee a coffee maker, but still good to check the photos and listing!
The other experts cover additional tips I suggested for the article, so be sure to read the entire thing. It’s called “7 Sneaky Things to Check for in Every Airbnb Listing” by Jennifer Prince on Apartment Therapy.
