Belize – Rum Tasting in San Igancio

Due to it positioning, the Caribbean has always had an enormous influence on Belize from its Creole language to its alcohol. We couldn’t leave Belize without understanding the tradition of making and drinking rum. The rum tasting in San Igancio at Traveller’s Maya Juice was educational and enjoyable. I recommend it for those looking for an evening activity.

Belize rum tasting in San Ignacio

We didn’t choose to stay at Rainforest Havens for the rum tasting, but since it was in the building, we couldn’t resist stopping by Traveller’s Maya Juice for some rum tasting in San Ignacio. We decided to do so on a whim after cave river tubing and going on an Iguana Tour. Jorge, our rum instructor, arrived slightly after us and allowed us to split the tasting. This was still plenty of rum for the both of us.

At a Glance:

  • Rating: 3 (out of 4) stars, would do it again.
  • Location: Rainforest Havens Inn, San Ignacio
  • Cost: $15USD/per person
  • Restrooms: In the lobby
  • Duration:  45 mins – 1 hour

Highlights:

  • Jorge let us split the tasting
  • Lovely educational evening activity

Jorge walked us through the process of making rum and what makes rum darker or lighter. Due to my extensive (lol, not really) wine tasting, the process of distilling rum didn’t seem like a completely foreign concept. We tasted both types as well as aged rum and flavored rum. He also suggested which rums would be best to mix or to drink alone. There were five little glasses on our tasting platter, but I believe we were able to convince Jorge to allow us to try one or two other ones. Jorge also wove in the history of Belize into the tasting effortlessly.

The beauty of staying at the Rainforest Havens Inn was not just the large rooms, but also because after the rum tasting, we could make our way upstairs and snuggle into bed. But since San Ignacio is so small, you  could easy walk from a downtown hotel. it’ It was a delightful night cap.

Where have you done a rum tasting? Let me know, because I wouldn’t mind trying new locations!

Happy Travels,

Hanna
