Belize Vegetarian Eats
Belize vegetarian eats – San Ignacio
San Ignacio’s downtown area is all very close together. We walked from our accommodations on one side of town to the Guava Limb Cafe in about 5 minutes, or a ten minute stroll. I loved this size town for walkability. Both Ko-Ox Han Hah and Guava Limb were highly recommended to us by two different people, so we thought we should give them a try. All three restaurants listed below were excellent!
We ended up going here twice – it was that yummy! We particularly like the blended ice coffee and quesadilla. The quesadilla was so enormous that we split it and still couldn’t finish every bite. They seemed open to modifications, if needed.
How lovely is this place? The setting here is worth coming by for at least a drink or drink plus dinner. The setting is in a teal green house with lush gardens and a view over a grassy park. We loved sitting on the second story at sunset and the sandwich we split was delicious! I normally wouldn’t come to a nicer restaurant like this, but it was darling and felt like a real treat.
We visited pop’s for breakfast each morning. It is a sit-down restaurant, but I did see some girls get to-go items (probably before a tour, like our river tubing tour). It felt like a Belize diner, if that makes any sense, with a very local menu. We got to try the famous fry jacks for breakfast! I also enjoyed my channa scramble.
To experience the Caribbean influence on Belize, we did a rum tasting in San Igancio! Check out the post where I wrote about the rum tasting here.
Belize vegetarian eats – Caye Caulker
It was harder to find places to eat on Caye Caulker because there is such an emphasis on the fresh seafood. When we arrived, it’s true that most restaurants repeated the same seafood options, but I was able to find a few dinner restaurants with a veggie section on their menu. Fresh fruit is plentiful as well as cute coffee shops, so breakfast was a bit easier.
The sunset views would have been magnificent here, but we arrived a little later. At least we were able to catch their reasonable happy hour. I got their coconut curry with two sides – everything was delicious!
This restaurant had the largest veggie section on the menu before going. I got the veggie burrito, stuffed with veggies. It was pretty good, although not extraordinary.
Fry Jacks for breakfast! Wow, this place is a classic must-experience inexpensive to-go place. They fill an enormous fry jack with your choice of filling. With a price tag that is $2.50 BZE, it cannot be beat. I got the egg and cheese filling. It was delicious, but I couldn’t finish it because I am not used to having fried foods for breakfast.
Smoothie Place next to Errolyns: Right next to Errolyns is a fruit stand with the best smoothies and juices for $5BZE. The smoothies are pretty simple, but somehow the fruit flavor is extra intense. So good. Super duper recommend.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
The lack of language barrier made it easy to understand menus and make modifications, if necessary. Also due to the tourism, I imagine there will be more and more veggie and vegan options in the future. For example, we saw a vegan restaurant in Belize City, which didn’t exist when a friend of mine visited 10 years ago. Also the use of coconut oil, instead of butter made me feel a bit better about my decisions.
Would you have a fry jack for breakfast? Let me know in the comments!
